George Lucas Directing George Lucas And Harrison Ford Raiders Of The Lost Ark Director George Lucas George Lucas

The sound and music are 50% of the entertainment in a movie.

The script is what you've dreamed up-this is what it should be. The film is what you end up with.

I am simply trying to struggle through life; trying to do God's bidding.

I've had a very volatile relationship with Francis (Ford Coppola). It's on both sides, like we were married and we got divorced. It's as close a relationship as I've had with anybody.

If you can tune into the fantasy life of an 11-year-old girl, you can make a fortune in this business.

The parallels between what we did in Vietnam and what we're doing in Iraq now are unbelievable.

Part of the reason I went back to tell the prequel, of how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader, is that it's an interesting story and a fun one to tell. Because it is the story of how a good person turns bad.

I hate corporations and I'm not happy that they have taken over the film business but on the same hand I find myself being the head of a corporation. There's a certain irony there.

A special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing.

George Walton Lucas Jr. was born on May 14th, 1944 in Modesto, California. His father George Lucas Sr. and mother Dorothy Lucas sold stationery and office supplies.

His first passion was cars and drag racing, but his ambitions were extinguished by a life-threatening car crash. A chance encounter with cinematographer Haskell Wexler encouraged Lucas to explore filmmaking and he enrolled in the Cinema School at the University of Southern California.

Straight out of USC he was taken under the wing of Francis Ford Coppola, who was setting up American Zoetrope, a haven for young independent-minded filmmakers.

After failing to acquire the rights to Flash Gordon he spent two years writing and researching The Star Wars, as it was then called. The script was turned down by practically every studio in Hollywood until Alan Ladd Jr., a huge Graffiti admirer, at 20th Century Fox invested in the movie and allowed the sequel and merchandising rights to remain with Lucas.

Star Wars (1977) became the most profitable film of all time, both at the box office and on the toy shelves. It also changed Lucas’s life, making him extraordinarily wealthy. But, at the height of his powers and popularity as a director, he made an unexpected move. He retired.

Lucas’s decision to withdraw from directing didn’t stop him making movies. He provided stories for and supervised, the equally successful Star Wars sequels. He also presided over a diverse range of productions, from the commercial Indiana Jones trilogy to Mishima and Howard the Duck.

Lucas is a notoriously quiet figure on set. A lot of his direction takes place before the cameras roll, planning out the movie with computerized storyboarding. Once filming has finished, his skilful use of cutting-edge visual effects with imaginative editing and sound design add another level of manipulation.

He is a diabetic.

When he writes, he does it in longhand in a loose leaf binder rather than on a word processor.

He based the character of Han Solo on his friend Francis Ford Coppola.

He became so stressed during the filming of “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope” (1977) that he checked himself into a hospital, where he was diagnosed with hypertension.

He disowned “Howard the Duck” (1986) after the film's release.

His favorite stage of film-making is editing the film together.

His nickname in high school was Luke. This later became the name of the hero of his original Star Wars trilogy, Luke Skywalker.

Had a dog named 'Indiana' which not only inspired the Indiana Jones character, but Chewbacca from Star Wars was also modeled around the way the dog looked.

He was inspired to create his iconic villain Darth Vader by Marvel Comics villain, and arch enemy of the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom.

He is a fan of "Doctor Who" (1963).

He is a fan of "Family Guy" (1999)
