Gene Kelly Gene Kelly Dancing Gene Kelly in Singin In The Rain

Gene Kelly was the only rival to Fred Astaire as Hollywood's greatest male dancer, although the men's dancing style and image were very different. Astaire sported top hat and tails, and Kelly was more famed for his casual dress. Kelly's style was more muscular and masculine than Astaire's, and his singing voice, husky and melodious, had a stronger presence.

As a child, Kelly performed in vaudeville with his four siblings. He went on to study law while working as a teacher at his family's dance studio. But he decided to pursue a career in showbiz full time, and in 1938 he dropped out of law school and moved to New York. He made his name on Broadway in Rogers and Hart's Pal Joey, and was brought to Hollywood to appear with Judy Garland in For Me and My Gal (1942). Cover Girl (1944) saw him costar with Rita Hayworth. He went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in Anchors Aweigh (1945), in which he danced with Jerry Mouse.

Together with director Stanley Donen, Kelly revitalized the film musical, taking such innovative pictures as On the Town (1949), Singin' in the Rain (1952), and It's Always Fair Weather (1955) out of the theater and film studios and into the streets. Kelly's work with Vincente Minnelli on The Pirate (1948) and An American in Paris (1951) was no less accomplished, if more stylized. Invitation to the Dance (1956), which Kelly directed himself, was an experiment, telling three separate stories through dance alone. His later directorial outings, including the Barbra Streisand wehicle Hello, Dolly! (1969), were more conventional. In 1951 Kelly was awarded a special Academy Award for his achievements in choreography. He was the ideal host for the compilation of MGM's greatest musicals, That's Entertainment (1974), and its sequels.

If Fred Astaire is the Cary Grant of dance, I'm the Marlon Brando.

I never wanted to be a dancer. It's true! I wanted to be a shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Kelly's father was Al Jolson's road manager in the 1920s.

Had a half-moon shaped scar on his left cheek caused by a bicycle accident he had as a young boy.

Was dance consultant for Madonna's 1993 "Girlie Show" tour.

He wore a hairpiece (toupee).

Had a fever of 103 degrees while filming the famous rain scene in Singing In The Rain.
