Eva Marie Saint Eva Marie Saint with her Academy Award Eva Marie Saint,Marlon Brando On The Waterfront

After graduating from high school, Eva Marie Saint moved west to study acting at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. In the 1940s she started out doing work in radio and TV before winning the Drama Critics Award for her Broadway stage role in The Top to Bountiful (1953). The next few years also saw her win two Emmy nominations for TV work, earning her the sobriquet "The Helen Hayes of Television." She then won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar (for playing a lead female role) in her screen debut, On the Waterfront (1954). A rare, beautiful character actress, Saint - as with many female Academy Award winners - had trouble finding worthy follow-ups to her breakthrough, and got stuck looking pretty next to Bob Hope in That Certain Feeling (1956), or frozen with the rest of the cast in Raintree County (1957) and Exodus (1960).

Saint is good in her Waterfront mode, as the addict's wife in A Hatful of Rain (1957), and superb as a Hitchcockian blonde, ensnaring Cary Grant on a train in North by Northwest (1959). At Alfred Hitchcock's insistence, Saint's waist-length hair was cut short for the role. Though drawn and lovely as Warren Beatty's object of desire in All Fall Down (1962), she spent most of the 1960s as a sidelined love interest in movies such as Grand Prix (1966), or overshadowed support, as in The Sandpiper (1965). She played a tough frontier woman in a good Western, The Stalking Moon (1968), and was terrific as George Segal's wife in Loving (1970), but found herself back with Bob Hope in Cancel My Reservation (1972). As an older actress finding less interesting film roles, she has returned mostly to the stage and TV. She played a mother in Wim Wenders's Don't Come Knocking (2005) and adoptive mother Martha Kent in Superman Returns (2006).

"I thought North by Northwest was as sexy as you can get and we had all our clothes on."
