Actor Ernest Borgnine Ernest Borgnine Actor Ernest Borgnine

The son of Italian immigrants, Ernest Borgnine spent ten years in the navy before going to drama school. His big break came in 1949, when he made his Broadway acting debut as a male nurse in Harvey. A few years later he made his movie debut, playing Bill Street in The Whistle at Eaton Falls (1951). With this and successive performances, Borgnine proved himself to be a capable and versatile character actor.

Borgnine won a Best Actor Academy Award for his personification of Paddy Chayefsky's inarticulate Italian butcher Marty Piletti in the film adaptation of Marty (1955), beating stiff competition from the likes of Spencer Tracy and James Dean. Broader and more sentimental than Rod Steiger's TV original - the Martys team as heavies in Jubal (1956) - the performance wears less well than Borgnine's many other supporting thugs, notably the sadistic Sergeant James "Fatso" Judson in From Here to Eternity (1953), Borgnine's big break; an outlaw in Johnny Guitar (1954); the cowboy thrown by Spencer Tracy's judo in Bad Day at Black Rock (1955); and the lusty chieftain jumping into a pit of wolves in The Vikings (1958).

He starred in the TV sitcom McHale's Navy (1962-1966), and its 1964 big-screen incarnation, and made a cameo appearance in the 1997 remake. But he also continued to work in strong roles for manly directors such as Robert Aldrich - as an officer in The Dirty Dozen (1967) and the brutal railroad bull in Emperor of the North Pole (1973). He was also enjoyable as the bullying boss eaten by rats in Willard (1971) and as a redneck demon in The Devil's Rain (1975). Borgnine continued to work, and has appeared in more than 100 feature films to date. He also did voice-over work, notably as Mermaid Man on TV's SpongeBob SquarePants (1999-2005).

Salaries:
Marty (1955) - $5,000 USD
From Here to Eternity (1953) $700 USD per week

The trick is not to become somebody else. You become somebody else when you're in front of a camera or when you're on stage. There are some people who carry it all the time. That, to me, is not acting. What you've gotta do is find out what the writer wrote about and put it into your mind. This is acting. Not going out and researching what the writer has already written. This is crazy!

Ever since they opened the floodgates with Clark Gable saying, 'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn,' somebody's ears pricked up and said, 'Oh boy, here we go!'. Writers used to make such wonderful pictures without all that swearing, all that cursing. And now it seems that you can't say three words without cursing. And I don't think that's right.

I like my women a little big. Natural. Now, they shave this and wax that. It's not right. I love natural women. Big women. This trend in women has to go. Bulomia, anorexia. That's just wrong.

He served 10 years in the Navy prior to acting.

Ernest had both knees replaced in 1999.

He is a Master Mason and has been elevated to the 33rd Degree in Scottish Rite.
