Edward Norton Double Shot Edward Norton Actor Edward Norton Edward Norton in American History X

When the courtroom drama Primal Fear (1996) was released, twenty-seven-year-old Yale University history graduate Edward Norton was a regionally known theater actor with the Signature Players, a New York company set up to produce Edward Albee's plays; he still serves as a board director. Thus acclaimed, he blew audiences away as Aaron Stampler, an altar boy accused of killing a Catholic bishop. An Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor followed, opening the door to roles as the love-struck Holden Spence opposite Drew Barrymore in Woody Allen's musical comedy Everyone Says I Love You (1996) and a lawyer in Milos Forman's The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996); but the essential Norton was already on display, charming and boyish, solicitous even, while also cold-blooded and smarter than everyone else.

A challenging actor, he electrified critics in American History X (1998), in which he beefed up to play a violent skinhead. The role won him his second Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actor. Now muscular and no longer bungling, he followed iwth David Fincher's Fight Club (1999), a fin de siecle masterstroke; made his directorial debut in the comedy Keeping the Faith (2000), which he also produced, cowrote, and starred in; appeared in the biopic Frida (2002); headlined Red Dragon (2002) and 25th Hour (2002); and was a masked supporting player in Kingdom of Heaven (2005). He then went on to play a magician in early-1900s Vienna in The Illusionist (2006), showing he can turn his hand to costume drama. Norton is the type of actor who is choosy about roles, strict about preparation, and at times difficult to work with; yet it is a small price to pay for the leading talent of his generation, a chameleon with an eye for great projects.

Life, like poker has an element of risk. It shouldn't be avoided. It should be faced.

Turned down the role of Private Ryan in Saving Private Ryan (1998).

He speaks Spanish

Auditioned for roles in With Honors (1994), Hackers (1995), and Up Close & Personal (1996) before his film debut in Primal Fear (1996).
