Dancing With The Stars Cast Jennifer Grey,Derek Hough,Dancing With The Stars Margaret Cho On Dancing With The Stars Cheryl Burke And Ian Ziering On Dancing With The Stars

This rather simple dance competition began by pairing six ‘celebrities’ with six professional dancers in a multi-week competition. Behind the scenes footage was shown of the celebs stumbling through practice sessions with their experienced partners, before strutting their stuff before a panel of expert judges who might be either easy or tough on them (Len and Bruno tended to squabble about that). The staging was lavish, with dazzling costumes, a large dance floor, full orchestra and studio audience. The celebrities included actors, singers, sports figures and even a few news personalities, and they were required to learn a different dance each week, including the waltz, cha-cha, rumba and tango. They generally worked hard at it. Half their score was determined by the judges, and the other half by viewers at home. The low-scoring team each week was eliminated.

Celebrities in the first season (summer 2005) were Joey McIntyre, Evander Holyfield, John O’Hurley, Trista Rehn, Rachel Hunter and Kelly Monaco. Kelly and her partner Alec Mazo were the ultimate winners, but there was so much controversy over the result that ABC staged a special ‘Dance Off’ rematch between Kelly and runner-up John O’Hurley on September 20 and 22, which was won by O’Hurley in a close vote.

Season two in early 2006 featured George Hamilton, Tatum O’Neal, Master P, Lisa Rinna, Jerry Rice, Tia Carrere, Kenny Mayne, Drew Lachey, Stacy Keibler and Giselle Fernandez. Pop star Drew Lachey and his partner Cheryl Burke won, jive-dancing to the strains of “Hound Dog”.

Season three’s (fall 2006) celebrities were Shanna Moakler, Monique Coleman, Tucker Carlson, Jerry Springer, Vivica A. Fox, Mario Lopez, Emmitt Smith, Sara Evans, Joey Lawrence, Willa Ford and Harry Hamlin. Evans withdrew due to a pending divorce, and the final winners were NFL running back Emmitt Smith and his partner Cheryl Burke.

Season four’s (spring 2007) stars were Pauline Porizkova, Laila Ali, Billy Ray Cyrus, Clyde Drexler, Joey Fatone, Shandi Finnessey, Leeza Gibbons, Heather Mills, Apolo Anton Ohno, John Ratzenberger and Ian Ziering. The winner was enthusiastic young Olympic speed skater Ohno and his partner Julianne Hough.

Season 5 was hosted by Tom Bergeron, with returning judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, and Carrie Ann Inaba. Co-host Samantha Harris gave birth on September 23, 2007; during her leave of absence Drew Lachey served as co-host. On October 15, 2007 Harris returned to the show.

The winner was Indy 500 champion racer Hélio Castroneves with his pro partner Julianne Hough.
