Dale Evans Postcard Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Dale Evans

Dale "Queen of the Cowgirls" Evans eloped with her high-school sweetheart to marry at the age of fourteen; she was divorced and a mother by the age of seventeen. She entered show business as a vocalist, singing with big bands such as the Anson Weeks Orchestra, before going solo as a radio station singer. Two marriages later, she arrived in Hollywood, and after minor roles, including an appearance with John Wayne in In Old Oklahoma (1943), she was cast opposite singing Western star Roy Rogers in Cowboy and the Senorita (1944). This proved the start of a long and successful partnership. A charming brunette with a melodious singing voice, Evans married Rogers in 1947. They acted and sang together in more than a score of films, and then on TV in The Roy Rogers Show (1951-1957). Evans was the composer of the couple's theme song, "Happy Trails," with which they closed the show each week.

Among their more successful pictures were The Yellow Rose of Texas (1944), Don't Fence Me In (1945), and Twilight in the Sierras (1950), with Evans usually riding her buckskin horse, Buttermilk. Their last appearance together on film was in Pals of the Golden West (1951). For many, the couple were the embodiment of the American dream, but their personal life was marred by tragedy, three of their children dying young. They became born-again Christians and opened a museum dedicated to their achievements, initially based in California and then relocated to Missouri. In the 1970s, Evans recorded several solo albums of religious music in the gospel vein, and the 1990s saw her host her own religious TV program, A Date with Dale (1996). She also wrote many books on her life and spiritual development through adversity, including the best seller Angel Unaware (1953).

Her horse's name was Buttermilk. Wrote the song, "Happy Trails", which became her and Roy Rogers' theme song.

Hospitalised in October 1999 with heart problems.

12 October 1999 - Underwent heart surgery to replace a pacemaker battery

Wrote the spiritual, "The Bible Tells Me So.".
