Clint Eastwood A Photo Collage Clint Eastwood Working Out Clint Eastwood - Actor and Director Clint Eastwood In The Good,The Bad And The Ugly

Arguably U.S. cinema's single most important representation of that country's masculine image - with all of the gender's complexities and conflicts - Eastwood can do macho swagger and ice-cold toughness better than any other performer, but there's much more to his onscreen persona (and his directorial talents) than just that. It would seem that many U.S. critics had to wait until this icon's septuagenarian years to finally catch on, whereas European cineasts saw Eastwood's depth decades ago. Regardless, Clint Eastwood is now the very definition of a movie star. And if the Europeans appreciated his talents first, it's only fitting that a European was the first filmmaker to really utilize Eastwood's steely gaze and laconic charm effectively.

Twenty-five when he began acting, Eastwood appeared in minor film roles before finding success in TV westerns, such as Rawhide (1959-1966). He worked on this level for nine years until Italian director Sergio Leone cast him in the Dollars trilogy - Per un pugno di dollari (1964) (A Fistful of Dollars), Per qualche dollaro in piu (1965) (For a Few Dollars More), and Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966) (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly). The films turned Eastwood into an international superstar, and he found further fame on home turf with adventures like Hang 'Em High (1968), Kelly's Heroes (1970), and - the film that really catapulted him into movie legend status - 1971's Dirty Harry.

It speaks volumes that within the same year of Dirty Harry's controversial release, Eastwood would make two of his most commendably odd and unique career choices: making his directing debut with Play Misty for Me, and appearing in Dirty Harry director Don Siegel's bizarre Gothic, The Beguiled. In both films Eastwood plays a superficially seductive lothario who is gradually weakened and dominated by the affections of his female conquests. The subtle inquiry into the definition of masculine strength would continue as a theme throughout his work, be it in the form of thrillers, or in tender romances like The Bridges of Madison County (1995).

Through the 1970s and into much of the 1980s Eastwood's work is frustratingly uneven: some great (High Plains Drifter, 1973; Escape from Alcatraz, 1979), interesting experiments (Bronco Billy, 1980), but ultimately a lot of forgettable fodder (City Heat, 1984 and Pink Cadillac, 1989, among others). None of the Dirty Harry sequels, including those directed by Eastwood himself, came close to matching the impact of the original film. One interesting, underrated gem during these lean years is Tightrope (1984), a perverse cop thriller that further explores male insecurities and the strength of women.

Then in the late 1980s, something shifted. Although he had already directed a dozen movies - many of them excellent - in 1988 Eastwood directed the Charlie Parker biopic Bird, inaugurating a new phase in his career, one in which directing would finally take precedence over acting. He is strong and commanding as ever directing himself in the Oscar-winning projects Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004), along with more neglected films like A Perfect World (1993), Letters from Iwo Jima, and Flags of Our Fathers (both 2006).

Age is indeed just a number - Eastwood is as hot, and even more talented, now in a way that hasn't been as exciting since his Dirty Harry heyday. Only now he's calling the shots - literally. It's only a shame he can't live for another 75 years.

"Go ahead, make my day."

"Do you feel lucky, punk?"

My father used to say to me, "Show 'em what you can do, and don't worry about what you're gonna get. Say you'll work for free and make yourself invaluable."

They say marriages are made in Heaven. But so is thunder and lightning.

I like working with actors who don't have anything to prove.

Is a partial owner of the Pebble Beach Golf Country Club in Monterey Peninsula, California.

Owns the inn Mission Ranch, Carmel, California.

He wore the same poncho, without ever having washed it, in all three of his "Man with No Name" Westerns.

Drafted and served in the US Army, assigned to Special Services. He was a swimming instructor. [1950-1954]

Fluent in Italian.

Definately one of the greatest actors and directors the screen has seen. I see the name Clint Eastwood on a movie and know I have to watch it. All time favorite would have to be his directing on Mystic River starring Sean Penn and Tim Robbins. His acting in Escape from Alcatraz and Unforgiven make them some of my favorite movies.
