Brigitte Bardot, or "BB," as she became known, was born the daughter of a wealthy industrialist. She was studying ballet when she was offered a modelling contract, and by the age of fifteen she was on the cover of Elle magazine. There she was spotted by director Marc Allegret, whose assistant, Roger Vadim, contacted Bardot. Although Allegret did not cast Bardot in a movie, Vadim fell in love with her, and they married in 1952.

She achieved worldwide fame with her starring role in Vadim's Et Dieu...crea la femme (1956) (And God Created Woman), in which she marries a young man while lusting after his brother. Her curvaceous figure and pretty, pouting face, her air of innocence combined with a constant suggestion of promiscuity, projected an uninhibited sexuality far removed from the primness of contemporary Hollywood stars.

Bardot's marriage to Vadim was only the first of a series of high-profile liaisons that kept her name constantly in the news, and the frequent nudity in her movies ensured the box-office success of such films as En cas de malheur (1958) (Love Is My Profession), in which she costarred with Jean Gabin. In the 1960s she worked with some important directors, such as Henri-Georges Clouzot in La Verite (1960) (The Truth), Louis Malle in Vie privee (1962) (A Very Private Affair), and Jean-Luc Godard in Le Mepris (1963) (Contempt). In Viva Maria! (1965), also directed by Malle, she costarred with Jeanne Moreau in a witty and entertaining Western. She retired from the cinema in 1973 on the eve of her fortieth birthday; since then she has devoted herself to animal rights and flirted with the extreme right-wing politics of Jean-Marie Le Pen. Bardot's fourth husband, Bernard d'Ormale, whom she married in 1992, is a Front National politician.

"I have been very happy, very rich, very beautiful...very famous and very unhappy."

If I could do anything about the way people behave towards each other, I would, but since I can't I'll stick to animals.

It is sad to grow old but nice to ripen.

Breast cancer survivor.

Animal rights activist.

Is a vegetarian.
