Brad Pitt attended the University of Missouri, majoring in journalism, but dropped out to move to Hollywood and pursue an acting career, studying under drama coach Roy London. A small but memorable role as a charming seducer and thief in Thelma & Louise (1991) brought Pitt to the attention of a wider audience and put him on the map as a male sex symbol. He made do with TV work before Ridley Scott's aforementioned fugitive film made him famous, and has since starred in mainstream work and riskier material. He juggled flops with higher-profile films such as A River Runs Through It (1992), Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994), Legends of the Fall (1994), Se7en (1995), and the film that won him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, Twelve Monkeys (1995), all of which revealed his range and enduring popularity.

All the same, Pitt's box-office track record has been erratic. Films such as Fight Club (1999) were greater artistic successes than financial ones, and occasional hits such as Ocean's Eleven (2001) and its sequel have been offset by failures such as the overblown epic Troy (2004). Although an earlier relationship with actress Gwyneth Paltrow primed Pitt for the invasiveness of the tabloid newspapers, it was in 2000 with his marriage to Jennifer Aniston,actress and star of the hit TV show Friends (1994 - 2004), that saw Pitt firmly become grist for the rumor mill. This status was sealed after their divorce and his subsequent romance with actress Angelina Jolie. The romance helped boost the middling Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), in which they both starred, into a blockbuster. Indeed, no matter the fate of his films, Pitt remains one of Hollywood's biggest stars, and he continues to use that fame as leverage to get less commercial projects such as Babel (2006) produced.
