Bob Hope with his Academy Award Bob Hope Entertaining The Troops Lucille Ball and Bob Hope

Sir Bob Hope was among the screen's greatest star comedians and an acknowledged model for everyone from Woody Allen to Eddie Murphy. He emigrated from England to the United States in 1908, and after years as a dancer and singer in vaudeville, he made a few shorts such as the The Old Grey Mayor (1935) before a featured spot in The Big Broadcast of 1938 (1938) elevated him to stardom. Thanks for the Memory (1938) takes its title from the song he performed in the earlier film, which became his signature tune and set the tone for his subsequent star vehicles.

Paramount Pictures partnered Hope happily with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour in the "Road to..." series from 1940 in Road to Singapore, but Hope was as funny without Crosby in The Cat and the Canary (1939), My Favorite Blonde (1942), The Paleface (1948), and others. His screen character is a fast-talking coward, braggart, and lecher who blunders blithely into tight spots: pursued by a zombie in The Ghost Breakers (1940) and swashbuckling villains in Casanova's Big Night (1954). His vehicles became more strained in the 1950s and 1960s, and a semiserious political biopic, Beau James (1957), didn't click, but he remained a presence in U.S. entertainment throughout his life on radio, TV, and the stage, always receiving awards and plaudits. Hope hosted the Academy Awards ceremony 18 times. Famous for entertaining the troops during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, in 1997 Congress made him an honorary U.S. veteran - the only person to receive that distinction. He was given an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998, and by the end of his life had received five special Academy Awards for contributions to the industry.

Golf is my real profession - show business pays my greens fees.

You know you're getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.

[When asked by his wife where he wanted to be buried] Surprise me.

Welcome to the Academy Awards -- or as it's known at my house, Passover.

Has entertained the troops overseas in every war from WWII to the Gulf War

He was the only entertainer to have complete carte blanche to walk on whenever he felt like it on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" (1962).

Has a ship named after him: USNS Bob Hope.

As a young comedian, he won a Charles Chaplin look-alike contest in Cleveland.

Was briefly a professional boxer. He fought under the name Packy East.

Despite a well documented reputation for frugality, Hope is believed to have donated an estimated $1 billion to charity.
