Actor And Comedian Billy Crystal Billy Crystal Doing Stand Up Billy Crystal Hosting The Academy Awards

Billy Crystal was born and raised on Long Island, New York. His father was a concert promoter, so his youth was filled with celebrity guests such as Billie Holiday and Pee Wee Russell in the family home. He began doing a stand-up comedy act in the early 1960s, graduated from New York University in film and TV direction (where he studied under director Martin Scorsese), and got married. He started to earn a reputation for his comic imperonations and became the opening act for musicians such as Barry Manilow. Leaving New York for Hollwood in 1976, he made a splash on the TV sitcom Soap (1977-1981) as the gay character Jodie Dallas, and later capitalized on this exposure when he became a cast member on the TV show Saturday Night Live (1984-1985).

Such national recogniton eventually led to the big screen, although his success has largely depended upon a good co-star. First up was as a cop in Running Scared (1986), opposite Gregory Hines; then as a student in Throw Momma from the Train (1987), opposite Danny DeVito; and, finally, the love-struck best friend in When Harry Met Sally... (1989), opposite Meg Ryan, which made him a bankable box-office success. He went on to star as a salesam hit by a midlife crisis in City Slickers (1991), while at the same time establishing himself as preferred host for the annual Oscars telecast, for which he has won several Emmy Awards. In the years since, he has been in a few small experiments such as the devil in Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry (1997); a few bombs such as a Hollywood agent in My Giant (1998); a few hits such as a shrink to a mobster in Analyze This (1999) and its sequel Analyze That (2002); and one beloved masterpiece as a kindly monster in Monsters,Inc. (2001).

"Women need a reason to have sex. Men just need a place."

He was Jay Leno's very first guest on Monday May 25, 1992 when Jay took over the late night throne vacated by Johnny Carson on Friday May 22, 1992.

Used to be the opening act for Sammy Davis Jr..

On March 12, 2008 as a 60th birthday gift, he signed a one day minor league contract with New York Yankees. On March 13, 2008 he played his only game with the Yanks vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates at DH wearing #60. In his first and only at bat he made contact with a foul ball but struck out. He received a standing ovation. Just one day later, the Yanks officially released him.
