During wartime soldier Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) tries to find inner peace by going native in his Avatar, finding a more grounded, loving existence among the indigenous (alien) peoples he has been taught are his enemy.

An "avatar" is a genetically engineered alien body that allows one to survive in the hostile atmosphere of the moon Pandora.

James Cameron conceived the idea of Avatar when he was working on Titanic, but the technology wasn't available then to bring his vision to life on the screen.

Cameron wrote Avatar in 1995.

The actors performed their roles and then animators used those performances to make the avatars look life-like on the screen. WETA Digital made the avatars do exactly what the actors did during the performance capture sessions.

Shot in stereoscopic 3-D using the Fusion Camera System, co-developed by Cameron and Pace. The Fusion Camera System took seven years to create and is now the most advanced system of its kind.

Worthington went through weapons training and special physical training to play Jake. Worthington says it was getting ready to play the role mentally that was the most important part of preparing for Avatar. "I didn't want my prep to be like boot camp," he says. "Anyone can do push-ups. I hung out with Jim [Cameron's] brother, John David, a former Marine. To me it was more about capturing the way these Marines see the world - and how their training can make them think they're unstoppable."

Seeing the character of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) convinced James Cameron that CGI effects had progressed enough to make this film.

Each frame (1/24 of a second) of the CGI scenes took an average of 47 hours to complete.

Submit Interesting Facts

Jake Sully: Everything is backwards now, like out there is the true world, and in here is the dream

Jake Sully: One life ends, another begins.

Moat: It is decided. My daughter will teach you our ways. Learn well, "Jakesully", and we will see if your insanity can be cured

Col. Quaritch: You are not in Kansas anymore, you are on Pandora, ladies and gentlemen, respect that fact every second of every day.

Dr. Grace Augustine: They're pissing on us and not even giving us the courtesy of calling it rain.

In the command deck area, Parker Selfridgee is practicing his putting with 3 balls, shooting one into the cup with a perfect shot allowing the viewer to see the other two balls sitting next to the other near his feet. Grace comes into the deck to speak with Parker and the two balls that are adjacent are now separated, Parker lines up his shot, putts and when Grace kicks the cup we see the two balls rejoined next to one another once more.

In the scene where the escape the hanger, the transport ship is shot up and the glass to the cockpit is damaged. Later we see the glass is not broken when they fight to destroy the bomb ship.

Submit Goofs & Blunders

A fully believable, flesh-and-blood (albeit not human flesh and blood) romance is the beating heart of "Avatar." Cameron has never made a movie just to show off visual pyrotechnics: Every bit of technology in "Avatar" serves the greater purpose of a deeply felt love story. Reviewed by: Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter.

Avatar is entertainment of the highest order. It's the best movie of 2009. Reviewed by: James Berardinelli of ReelViews.

This is, simply put, one of the most beautiful movies you'll ever see. Reviewed by: Nick Starkey of Premiere.

Once again, [Cameron] has silenced the doubters by simply delivering an extraordinary film. There is still at least one man in Hollywood who knows how to spend $250 million, or was it $300 million, wisely. Reviewed by: Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times

It's been twelve years since "Titanic," but the King of the World has returned with a flawed but fantastic tour de force that, taken on its merits as a film, especially in two dimensions, warrants four stars. However, if you can wrap a pair of 3D glasses round your peepers, this becomes a transcendent, full-on five-star experience that's the closest we'll ever come to setting foot on a strange new world. Just don't leave it so long next time, eh, Jim? Reviewed by: Chris Hewitt of Empire.
