Larger than life and literally pulsing, a giant among men, Arnold Schwarzenegger began his performance career as a bodybuilder. He still holds the record for winning the most major bodybuilding events in history: 13 titles (one Mr. Junior Western Europe, seven Mr. Olympias, and five Mr. Universes). He was transformed into the embodiment of Robert E. Howard's fantastic Conan in Conan the Barbarian (1982), and unforgettably said, "I'll be back." His biceps are usually considered the high points of his performances but, in the end, Schwarzenegger is crazy like a fox; witness his foresight to see that James Cameron's cyborg thriller The Terminator (1984) would make his career. There's also the fact that he rode the long tail of California electoral unrest as a Republican candidate to land the governorship in 2003. He won reelection in 2006, proving he was a savvy politician, not just a celebrity face.

Along the way he married into the Kennedy clan (his wife Maria Shriver is the niece of President John F. Kennedy, and Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy), directed a movie for television, sired several children, and grew fabulously wealthy. Schwarzenegger's riches were accumulated not just from his movie roles but his line of weightlifting accessories and wise choice of real estate investments.

Among his more memorable adventure roles are Predator (1987), Total Recall (1990), True Lies (1994), and Batman & Robin (1997); and from the world of comedy, Twins (1988) and Kindergarten Cop (1990). Not bad for the son of an Austrian police officer who barely spoke English when he migrated to the United States in the 1960s. Not bad at all for the megalomaniac centerpiece of the bodybuilding documentary Pumping Iron (1977).
