Actor Antonio Banderas Antonio Banderas With Long Hair Antonio Banderas Antonio Banderas Black and White Photo

Born in Malaga, Spain, the young Antonio Banderas wanted to play professional soccer. However, he broke his foot as a teenager, and turned to acting instead. He studied at Malaga's School of Dramatic Art before starting a five-year stint with the prestigious National Theater of Spain in Madrid. He was spotted there by up-and-coming director Pedro Almodovar, and his movie career took off with a role in Almodovar's Laberinto de pasiones (1982) (Labyrinth of Passion).

The actor and director made a good team, and both rose to prominence on the heels of Matador (1986), the sexually provocative La ley del deseo (1987) (Law of Desire), Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios (1988) (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), and jAtame! (1990) (TieMe Up! Tie Me Down!). Banderas then headed for Hollywood, and quickly became one of Spain's most popular exports.

Having cut his teeth with a phonetically performed part in The Mambo Kings (1992), after earlier being ogled by Madonna in her expose Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991), Banderas had a few showy roles in films such as The House of the Spirits (1993), Philadelphia (1993), and Interview with a Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994) before establishing a creative partnership with Robert Rodriguez on Desperado (1995). Since then he has played a singing freedom fighter in Evita (1996), Zorro in The Mask of Zorro (1998) and its sequel, an Arab in The 13th Warrior (1999), Pancho Villa in TV's And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself (2003), and a hilarious animated Puss in Boots in Shrek 2 (2004). He has also married for the second time, to Hollywood movie actress Melanie Griffith, starred in several Broadway shows, and is now generally considered one of the world's great male beauties.

"This lust for beauty is a terrible thing. I've forbidden her from ever going to a cosmetic surgeon again. It is something we have agreed to for the sake of our marriage" [on his wife, Melanie Griffith, having more plastic surgery].

I admired Melanie before I loved her.

I get more attention as "the pussycat" in Shrek the Third (2007) than I ever did as Zorro.

Supports Real Madrid soccer team.

Has his own perfume/cologne brand for men.

Listed his favorite 2 movies as Orson Welles' The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) and Touch of Evil (1958).

Became a fan of his wife, Melanie Griffith, long before he met her in 1995. He had first seen her in the film Something Wild (1986) and thought she was beautiful and later told a Spanish magazine in 1989 that he would love to meet her.
