Mexican Actor Anthony Quinn Anthony Quinn with his Oscar Award Anthony Quinn

Anthony Quinn was of Irish and Mexican extraction, but could credibly portray most ethnicities. He played in more than 150 films, and was best known for his lead role in Alexis Zorbas (1964) (Zorba the Greek), a part that he reprised 20 years later on Broadway. He won two Oscars for Best Supporting Actor: as Marlon Brando's sidekick in Viva Zapata! (1952) and as the painter Paul Gauguin in the biopic Lust for Life (1956).

He started out in the 1930s, playing thugs, minions, and Native Americans - often warring against the white-eyes, as seen in his portrayal of Crazy Horse in They Died With Their Boots On (1941). By the 1950s he was prominent enough to share the screen with heavyweights, and starred opposite Henry Fonda as his psychotic gunslinger devotee in Warlock (1959). Quinn ventured abroad to play the strongman for Federico Fellini in La Strada (1954), and deliver a plug-ugly Quasimodo n Notre Dame de Paris (1956) (The Hunchback of Notre Dame).

Thereafter, he straddled the world in various "foreigner" roles in English-language movies, notably as the leader of the Howeitat tribe of Bedouin arabs in David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Quinn's personal life was also eventful. He married three times; first to actress Katherine DeMille, the adopted daughter of director Cecil B. DeMille. Tragically, the couple's first child drowned at age three in actor W. C. Fields's swimming pool. Quinn had nine children with his various wives, but fathered 13 children in all. His offscreen passion was art, and he was a successful painter and sculptor. In the 1980s, his artworks began to be exhibited internationally. He also wrote two volumes of memoirs, The Original Sin (1972) and One Man Tango (1997).

Quinn spent his last years in Bristol, Rhode Island. He died aged 86 in Boston, Massachusetts from pneumonia and respiratory failure while suffering from throat cancer shortly after completing his role in his last film, Avenging Angelo (2002).

His funeral was held in the First Baptist Church in America in the College Hill section of Providence, Rhode Island; late in life, he had joined the Foursquare evangelical Christian community. He is buried in a family plot in Bristol, Rhode Island.

In Europe an actor is an artist. In Hollywood, if he isn't working, he's a bum.

I never get the girl. I wind up with a country instead.

They said all I was good for was playing Indians.

Before he launched his acting career Quinn worked odd jobs as a butcher, a boxer, street corner preacher and a slaughterhouse worker.

Donated blood to John Barrymore whenever the older actor needed a transfusion.

Underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery in February 1990.
