Famous for her provocative behavior offscreen as well as her professional achievements, Angelina Jolie is the daughter of Marcheline Bertrand and actor Jon Voight, who divorced when she was just one year old. Her interest in acting began as a child when, at the age of seven, she appeared in Lookin' to Get Out (1982), starring Voight; she later trained at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute.

Her earliest major film was Hackers (1995), at which time she met her first husband and costar, Johnny Lee Miller. Jolie's best accolade came when she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of a psychiatric hospital inmate in Girl, Interrupted (1999). Her leading role as the video-game heroine in the blockbuster Lara Croft movies (2001,2003) included a minor role for her father, from whom Jolie has since become estranged, blaming his infidelities for her parents' divorce.

Her second marriage, to actor Billy Bob Thornton in 2000, ended in divorce in 2003. Undeterred, Jolie went on to have a romance with another costar, Brad Pitt, with whom she filmed the comedy Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005). Whether the romance began on set or after, it hit the headlines worldwide, given that Pitt was then married to actress Jennifer Aniston. While working in Cambodia on Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), Jolie bacame an advocate for the world's underprivileged. She was named a Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2001. She also has three adopted children. Although Jolie is famous for her humanitarian efforts, she has attracted attention for her troubled childhood, her feuds with her father, her attraction to men and women, and her flamboyant tattoos.
