Angela Lansbury and Tom Selleck in Murder She Wrote Angela Lansbury (1945) Angela Lansbury in Samson and Delilah

The daughter of an actress, Angela Lansbury was evacuated to the United States as a teenager at the start of World War II and became a U.S. citizen in 1951. She was Oscar-nominated for her debut as the flirty maid in Gaslight (1944), and again as the doomed Sybil Vane in The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945). As Sybil, she also warbled a ditty, signaling later success in stage musicals such as Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979), for which she received one of her four Tony awards. Lovely, shapely, and smart, she tended to get roles as "the other woman" in such movies as The Harvey Girls (1946) and The Court Jester (1955).

Lansbury then switched profitably to parts as the smothering mother, an act she tried out initially - with surprising success - on Elvis Presley in Blue Hawaii (1961) before more acclaimed turns with Warren Beatty in All Fall Down (1962) and with Laurence Harvey in The Manchurian Candidate (1962). As Mrs. Senator Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate, she abandoned her usual geniality, cooing semi-incestuously over the son she has had brainwashed into a zombie assassin for the communists so that her idiot husband can be swept into government with "powers that will make martial law look like anarchy." In later years, Lansbury graduated to playing sprightly, twinkling old ladies, as in Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), The Lady Vanishes (1979), and The Mirror Crack'd (1980). It's an act she successfully took to television as mystery writer Jessica Fletcher in the long-running popular series Murder, She Wrote (1984-1996), the role for which she is probably most famous. She is Granny in The Company of Wolves (1984), and voices a teapot in Beauty and the Beast (1991).

From 1940 to 1942 Lansbury studied acting at the Feagin School of Drama and Radio in New York City.

Her film debut came in the psychological thriller Gaslight (1944).

Angela was Spokeswoman for the ALS Association.
