Al Pacino Cool In Shades Al Pacino Autographed Picture Al Pacino Actor - Al Pacino

Born in the Bronx, New York, Al Pacino is the gold standard against which most American actors - indeed, most world actors - are judged. A lifelong bachelor, occasional film director (Looking for Richard, 1996), and performer inclined toward artistically varied pursuits, although one owing a tremendous debt to Hollywood's deep pockets, Pacino is quintessentially American. An ethnic type who succeeded beyond the usual bounds to help define the mainstream, he has prospered despite numerous obstacles.

With age, his once pretty face has begun to droop, taking away the initial shine of youth. But his face is cut with a rich, dangerous smile and bright, orbital eyes that frequently give his performances a sense of caricature, inasmuch as Pacino has so wholly embodied cartoon-style villains (Dick Tracy, 1990), leading men (The Godfather: Part II, 1974), monsters (The Devil's Advocate, 1997), and working-class nobodies (Frankie and Johnny, 1991) with equal panache. His body also has a tendency to softness and is hunched, almost plodding, whereas his voice is explosive and angry. His dynamic range quickly changes, but it is the more minute details of his performances we often admire - typically the pair of everlarge hands he uses with great expressivity. In short, his physical vessel is not easily categorized as "handsome" in a field replete with handsome men. But perhaps it is because of this refreshing contrast with the elitist WASP type that Pacino has been movie royalty for nearly two generations.

More remarkably, his roles are where words and actions truly leave the stage or screen, as the case may be, and it is here that Pacino has always made his mark. Trained as a Method actor under the tutelage of Lee Strasberg, he has honed his technique to a point. His style is therefore concerned with capturing emotional states and embodying them through physical performance, as well as in the employment of setting, decor, and lights - the purview of important collaborators like Sidney Lumet, Norman Jewison, Francis Ford Coppola, and Michael Mann. Consequently, Pacino is central to the golden period of Hollywood in the 1970s, and it's his career-long association with quality work, with one or two exceptions (Cruising, 1980; Revolution, 1985), that makes him such a respected performer.

Over the decades he has become a legend, a performer sui generis while miraculously continuing a seemingly neverending career prime, and all this despite originally possessing a rather effeminate voice now made gruff with age, a slight presence, and being Italian during a period when such traits were normally the stuff of support players at best. Pacino is therefore a working-class hero and gentleman's model both, which is a testament to his skill and the application of thoughtful craftsmanship.

Witness his eponymous hero in Serpico (1973), the sad-sack bank robber Sonny in Dog Day Afternoon (1975), hanger-on Lefty Ruggiero in Donnie Brasco (1997), or the maniacal Tony Montana in Scarface (1983). Yet all roads flow through The Godfather (1972), that bedrock of modern U.S. cinema, because Al Pacino will be forever remembered as Michael Corleone.

In one performance - indeed the role of a lifetime - Pacino embodies the American dream of "hard work wins out" and the nightmare of loyalty to tribe, with the entire twentieth-century immigrant experience providing a backdrop of fratricide, murder, dashed love, and the accumulation of power. Still, he can cater for those who are partial to the "hoo-aah" of Lt. Col. Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman (1992), his Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning performance. But for others, the standout performances lie off to one side in such projects as Heat (1995), The Insider (1999), Carlito's Way (1993), and his Emmy Award-winning, electrifyingly nasty Roy Cohn in the HBO adaptation for television of Tony Kushner's Angels in America (2003). Pacino stands out as one of the most origianl and influential actors of his generation.

My first language was shy. It's only by having been thrust into the limelight that I have learned to cope with my shyness.
