Actor Adam Sandler Adam Sandler - Actor Adam Sandler dapper in white Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler is one of those actors critics love to hate, dismissing his comedy as vulgar and lowbrow, yet audiences seem to love him, and the loyal fan base for his features has proved he can keep box-office cash registers full. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he grew up in New Hampshire and started out playing Boston's comedy clubs as a stand-up comedian. He was only seventeen years old when he won an amateur comedy competition. While studying fine arts at New York University, he worked on New York's comedy circuit.

After a few bit parts on TV, his career really took off on TV's Saturday Night Live, from 1990 to 1995. Sandler left the show to focus on his movie work, writing and starring in several crude comedies, including Billy Madison (1995) and Happy Gilmore (1996). But, in 1998, Sandler began evolving as an actor, creating a series of comic roles that made some critics rethink their initial opinion of Sandler as yet another unfunny Saturday Night Live alumnus: The Wedding Singer (1998), Punch-Drunk Love (2002), 50 First Dates (2004), and Spanglish (2004) all indicated a maturation in his career. His performance in Puch-Drunk Love earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination. Through his own production company, Happy Madison Productions, Sandler wrote and produced (and supplied the lead voice for) the animated musical comedy Eight Crazy Nights (2002). However, despite the reference to his own hit "The Chanukah Song" (1994), it was disappointing for not following through and presenting a Jewish holiday movie. Sandler's comedy albums are immensely popular, and have all reached either gold or double platinum levels' his Stan and Judy's Kid (1999) debuting at Number 16 on the U.S. Billboard chart.

He is a huge fan of Van Halen and Styx. There is usually a reference or song in his movies.

He was originally set to play taxi driver Max in Collateral (2004), opposite Tom Cruise, but he backed out to work on Spanglish (2004).
